What is a domain name?

A domain name is an address on the internet that uniquely identifies your website. It's usually of the form www.companyname.com, though you can get domain names based on countries as well. An example would be www.redbank.ie, which is an Irish domain name.

Why do I want a domain name?

Basically, a domain name gives your business a more professional appearance on the web. You can host your website with various free webhosting services, such as Angelfire or Geocities. However, if you do this, your website address might look something like :

http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/companyname

or

http://www.angelfire.com/pr7/companyname/index.html

which is not very inspiring, let alone easy to remember. A domain name like www.companyname.com is much more professional, and will generate more confidence in your business.

How do you register a domain name?

You contact a domain name registration company, and you fill in a form giving the details of the domain name you want to register, your contact details, and details of the adminstrator of the domain, and the network administrator.

You should also have web hosting available, and information about the nameservers for the web hosting.

This is a fairly complex procedure.
