Secure Order Forms The Perceived Problem Many customers believe that giving their credit card out on the web is dangerous. There are crackers lurking everywhere, watching as the credit card numbers go by, and lifting them out. Websites everywhere are being attacked and credit card information is being stolen, and the thieves use this information to run up huge credit card debts and commit identity theft. The Truth The truth is that the chances of having your credit card information stolen while using it on the web is vanishingly small. You are more at risk handing your credit card to a waiter in a restaurant. There is nothing to stop them running your card through the swipe multiple times, or copying out the details. Or, give your card number to a company over the phone. How do you know what happens to it after that? The fact is, the amount of data flowing on the internet is mind bogglingly vast. Every day, trillions and trillions of pieces of information pass through the internet. For a cracker to actually try to sift through this huge torrent of information would be rather like trying to drink from a firehose. With a straw. What is a Secure Web Page? A secure web page uses technology called Secure Sockets Layer. What this does is create a tunnel in the internet between the customer's web browser and your server. Any data sent from the web page is first encrypted, and then sent back to the server in a coded form through this tunnel. This effectively masks the data, so it is not possible to intercept and steal the information being transferred. What this actually means to you You need to be aware of the fact that people do not like giving their credit card information out over the web. It appears to be an inherently unsafe thing to do. There is very little you can do to persuade people that giving out their credit card information on an unsecured form is safe, even though it is. You need to be able to provide a secure method for people to be able to give you their credit card details, but how do you go about it? If your website is a 'home user' site on your Internet Service Providers server, with a web page address of the form www.your_isp.com/yourcompany or www.your_isp.com/~yourcompany, it is virtually impossible to set up a secure web page, because of the way the system works. Even if you have a domain name, such as www.your_company.com, it can be a lot of hassle getting everything set up. What we can do for you All you need to do is tell us what page on your current site contains the form you need to make secure. We take a copy of that page, and host it on our secure server. We then provide you with a link that you can add to any of your pages to point to the secure server. The link would be of the form: http://ns.irishservers.net/securepages/your_company/formpage.html The two elements in red, your_company and formpage can be set by you to whatever you like.
The whole process takes about 48 hours from start to finish. Would you like more information? Simply email us at info@aceposition.com , or use the form on the Pricing page, and we would be delighted to help with any questions you might have. |
